Winter Driving Safety Tips Drivers Should Take A Note Of

Driving conditions in winter can change fast. With Westlake, you’ll always be sure to have the right tires for your road trip!

Driving in winter can be a challenge for many. Snow, slippery roads, or reduced visibility can make it unpleasant. But it doesn’t have to be that hard. Simple checks and nifty tips make it less of a challenge – like the ones in this blog.

Inspect your mirrors and lights

Clean lights, windows, and mirrors before you set off. Then, while you’re cleaning your lights, check that they work too. It just takes a quick walk around your car when it’s dark. Lookout for your number plates lights as well. Replace lights if they are out.

A clear windscreen

A clear windscreen is an indisputable essential, no matter what season. You can also increase road visibility by utilizing dipped headlights, especially during the daytime. This improves your vision and makes you visible to other road users too.

Always keep a safe distance.

Stopping distances can take longer when the roads are slippery. Stay safe on roads by maintaining enough distance from the vehicle in front. This would also give you a better view of things on the road, such as slippery spots, potholes, or other debris.

Are your tires, right? (Inflated & grippy)

Keeping a safe distance from the car in front is great, but you still need grippy winter tires to stop. If you’re apprehensive about grip levels in winter, winter tires will give you peace of mind in near-zero and lower temperatures. Same on snow and ice.

The tire type is only half the battle, though. Your tire’s tread and the pressure should match the numbers in your vehicle’s handbook. Take it easy when you maneuver and avoid abrupt braking.

A note on tire pressure: a sudden drop in temperature can cause the tire pressure to fluctuate, check it every week in winter.

Watch out for cyclists.

Despite cold weather and rains, cyclists may still be on the road, and it’ll be hard to spot them.

Rather than risking cyclists’ safety, slow down beforehand to double-check your blind spots before pulling out of a junction or standing position.

Check your wipers and spray.

It’s not just the snow and dirt that can be tough to clean off your windscreen. You may also want a spray that eliminates what could get in your way while you drive, like bird droppings. Many of these sprays can improve visibility, so ensure your wipers are in good working condition.

If your wipers don’t leave your windscreen completely clear, they’re old and worn out. The heat from the sun causes the rubber to become hard and break down over time, and it causes smudging and smearing. They should be replaced right away.

This winter, we hope you stay safe on the roads. And when it’s time for new tires, Westlake has a wide range of Winter tires to choose from.
